Along with the rest of India, Mumbai, the commercial
capital, has seen an economic boom since the liberalization
of 1991, financing boom in the mid-nineties and information
technology, export, services and BPO boom of the decade. The
middle class in Mumbai is the segment most affected by the
explosion and is the driving force behind the boom consecutive
consumers. The upward mobility among Mumbaikars led to a direct
increase in consumer spending. Mumbai was ranked 10th among
the world's largest trading centres in terms of volume of
financial flows in a Mastercard survey compiled by the World,
which takes into consideration the size of the network in
addition to financial services stocks, bonds, derivatives
and market operations.
Civic administration
The city is administered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
(BMC) (formerly Bombay Municipal Corporation), with executive
powers in the municipalities of the commissioner, who is an
official appointed by IAS state government. The Company is
composed of 227 directly elected councillors representing
twenty-four wards, five advisers, and an incumbent mayor.
The BMC is responsible for municipal infrastructure and the
needs of the metropolis. A deputy municipal commissioner oversees
each district for administrative purposes.Almost all political
parties of candidates for election advisers. The Grand Mumbai
forms two districts of Maharashtra, with each district under
the jurisdiction of a District Collector. Collectors are in
charge of the accounting and collection of revenue for the
central government, and overseeing the national elections
held in the city.
The police in Mumbai is headed by a police commissioner,
who is an officer of the IPS. The police in Mumbai is the
state home ministry. The city is divided into seven police
zones and seventeen areas of traffic police, each headed by
a Deputy Commissioner of Police. The Traffic Police is a semi-autonomous
as part of the Mumbai police. Mumbai is the headquarters of
the Bombay High Court, which has jurisdiction over the states
of Maharashtra and Goa, and the Union territories Daman and
Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Mumbai also has two lower
courts, Small Causes Court for civil cases, and the Sessions
Court for criminal cases.
