Geography of Mumbai

The city is composed of the city, the suburban neighbourhood and the cities of Mumbai and Navi Thane Mumbai is located on seven islands now merged (see seven islands of Bombay), which are the island of Bombay, Mazagaon, Colaba, Old Woman's Island, Parel, Worli, and Salsette Island. Bombay is located at the mouth of the river Ulhas off the west coast of India, in the coastal region known as the Konkan. Much of Mumbai is just above sea level and an average altitude varies from 10 m (33 ft) to 15 m (49 ft). North Mumbai is hilly, and the culmination of the town is 450 metres (1450 feet). Mumbai extends over a total area of 603 sq km (233 sq mi).


 

Five lakes provide water in Mumbai: Lakes Vihar, Vaitarna, Powai, Tulsi and Tansa. Tulsi Lake, Powai Vihar Lake and Lake are located within the boundaries of the city, the first two being located in the Borivali National Park, and the supply of the city with drinking water. Mumbai also has three small rivers in the city limits, from the National Park. The coastline of the city is indented with numerous creeks and bays. The Salsette east coast of the island is covered with large mangrove forests, rich in biodiversity. The west coast is mostly sandy and rocky.


 

Coverage of the ground in the city of sand region is predominantly due to its proximity to the sea In the suburbs, land cover and is essentially alluvial loam. The underlying rocks in the region is composed of black basalt flows Deccan, and variations of acid and base dating from the late Cretaceous and early Eocene epochs. Mumbai is located on a seismically active area because of the presence of three fault lines in the vicinity. The area is classified as Zone III region, which means an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale can be expected. Mumbai is classified as a metropolis of India, under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. It consists of two distinct regions - the city and the suburbs, which also form two districts of Maharashtra. The city is also the area known as the city of the island.
