KOLKATA 

Kolkata schools are either run by the state government or individuals (many of which are religious) organizations. The schools use primarily English or Bengali as the medium of instruction, even if the Hindi and Urdu are also used. The schools are affiliated to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), or the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Under the 10 +2 +3 plan after completing high school, students are usually 2 years in junior college (also known as pre-university) or in schools with an upper secondary school affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Education. Students usually choose one of three tracks - liberal arts, commerce, or science, although Vocational are also available. After completing the course, students may enroll in general or professional degree programs. Kolkata nine universities, many colleges are affiliated to the nine or to other universities outside of Kolkata. The University of Calcutta (founded in 1857) has more than 200 affiliated colleges. Bengal Engineering & Science University, West Bengal University of Technology and Jadavpur University engineering are universities. Calcutta Medical College is the first institution of allopathic medicine in Asia. Other institutions are Presidency College and St. Xavier's College. Some institutions of national importance are the Asiatic Society, Bose Institute, the Indian Statistical Institute, the Indian Institute of Management, Indian Association for the culture of science, the variable energy Cyclotron Centre, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences and the Marine Engineering Research Institute, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, the SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences and the Indian Institute of social welfare and business management.

As in the rest of India, cricket is extremely popular and is played throughout the city, in its reasons and in the streets. Tournaments, especially those involving outdoor games such as cricket, soccer, badminton and indoor games like carrom or are held regularly on an inter-city and inter-club. The region is home to several minor maidan cricket and football clubs and coaching institutes. Notable sports stars Kolkata national include former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly tennis and Olympic bronze medallist Leander Paes. Former football stars include Olympic medalist Shailen Manna, Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Subrata Bhattacharya. Kolkata is known for its major stages. The Eden Gardens is one of only two places in the 100000 cricket stadiums in the world. Salt Lake City Stadium - a multi-purpose stadium - is the third highest-capacity football stadium. Calcutta Cricket and Football Club is the second oldest cricket club in the world. Kolkata has three 18-hole golf course at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (the first golf club in the world outside of Britain), Tollygunge Club and Fort William. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) regularly organises horse racing and polo matches. The Calcutta Polo Club is now considered the oldest polo club in the world. The Calcutta South Club is the place of some national and international tennis tournaments. The Rowing Club Calcutta regularly hosts rowing races and training.
