The years 1996-1998 were a period of turbulence in the federal government with several short-term alliances has raged. The BJP formed a government briefly in 1996, followed by the United Front coalition excluded from both the BJP and the INC in 1998, the BJP formed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with several other parties and has become the first non-Congress government to complete a term of five years. In India in 2004 elections, the INC won the largest number of Lok Sabha seats and formed a government with a coalition called the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), supported by various left-wing parties and members of the opposition BJP.

Foreign relations and military

Since its independence in 1947, India has maintained cordial relations with most nations. He took a leading role in the 1950s by advocating the independence of European colonies in Africa and Asia. India has been involved in two brief military interventions in neighboring countries - Indian force keeping the peace in Sri Lanka and Operation Cactus in Maldives. India is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement. After the Sino-Indian War and the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965, India's relations with the Soviet Union warmed at the expense of ties with the United States and continued to stay until the end of the war Cold. India has fought three wars with Pakistan, primarily over Kashmir, but he also facilitated the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. Other clashes took place between the two countries in particular, in 1984, on the Siachen glacier and Kargil in 1999. In recent years, relations between the United States and India have improved. In recent years, India has played an influential role in ASEAN, SAARC and WTO. India has provided more than 55,000 Indian military and police personnel to serve in thirty-five operations peacekeeping United Nations on four continents. Despite criticism and military sanctions, India has consistently refused to sign the CTBT and the NPT, preferring instead to maintain sovereignty over its nuclear weapons. The recent openings by the  Government of India has strengthened relations with the United States, China and Pakistan. In the economic sphere, India has close relations with other developing countries in South America, Asia and Africa.


 

India maintains the third largest military in the world, which consists of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Auxiliaries such as paramilitary forces, the Coast Guard and the Strategic Forces Command also come under the jurisdiction of the military. The President of India is the supreme commander of the Indian armed forces. India maintains close defense cooperation with Russia, France and Israel, which are the main suppliers of weapons. Defense Research and Development (DRDO) has overseen the indigenous development of sophisticated weapons and military equipment, including ballistic missiles, fighter aircraft and main battle tanks to reduce the dependence of India on foreign imports. India became a nuclear power in 1974 after its first nuclear test, Operation Smiling Buddha and underground tests in 1998. India maintains a "no first use" nuclear policy. On 10 October, 2008 Indo-US civil nuclear was signed before India has received from the IAEA and NSG waivers, the end of restrictions on trade in nuclear technologies.

States and territories of india 

India is a federal republic comprising twenty-eight states and seven union territories. All states and two union territories of Pondicherry and the territory of the national capital of Delhi have elected governments. The other five union territories have appointed central administrators and hence are in direct presidential rule. In 1956 the States under the  Reorganization Act, states were formed on a linguistic basis. Since then, this structure has remained virtually unchanged. Each state or territory of the European Union is divided into 610 districts of basic governance and administration. The districts are further subdivided into tehsil and, possibly, in the villages.
