Vivekananda’s Death

On July 4, 1902 at Belur Math, near Calcutta, he taught philosophy at Vedanta some students in the morning. He had a walk with Swami Premananda, a disciple-brother, and gave him instructions on the future of the Ramakrishna Math. He died in the evening after a prayer meeting at Belur Math. He was 39. Doctors ruled that the cause of death was stroke, but the monks were convinced he had reached mahasamadhi, like Sri Ramakrishna had predicted. Vivekananda had fulfilled his own prophecy not live to forty-years.

Principles and philosophy

Vivekananda was a renowned thinker in his own right. One of his major contributions was to show how Advaitin thinking is not just philosophically from long range, but as it also has social, even political, consequences. One important lesson he claimed to receive from Ramakrishna was that "Jiva is Shiva" (each individual is very god). This became his mantra, and he coined the term daridra narayana seva - in the service of God and through (bad) humans. If there really is the unity of Brahman underlying all phenomena, and then, based on what we consider to be better or worse, or even as better-off or worse-off than others? -- This was the question he posed to himself. Ultimately, he concluded that these distinctions fade into nothing in the light of unity that the devotee experiences in Moksha. What then arises is the compassion for "individuals" who remain ignorant of this unity and a determination to help them.

Swami Vivekananda belonged to this branch of Vedanta which ruled that no one can be truly free until all of us. Even the desire to hi staff must be abandoned, and only the tireless work for the hi other is the true mark of a person enlightened. He founded the Sri Ramakrishna Math and mission on the principle of Atmano Mokshartham Jagad hitaya-cha (for its own hi and for the welfare of the world).

However, Vivekananda has also advocated a strict separation between religion and government ( "church and state"), a value found in Freemasonry as a freemasonry which he had been exposed. Although social customs was formed in the past with religious sanction, now it is not the business of religion to interfere in such matters as marriage and inheritance. The ideal society would be a mixture of Brahmin knowledge, culture Kshatriya, Vaisya effectiveness and ethics egalitarian Shudra. The domination of one led to different kinds of companies unbalanced. Vivekananda does not believe that religion or in any force of this question should use force to bring about an ideal society, as it was something that would evolve naturally by individualistic change when the conditions were met .

Vivekananda is a clear demarcation between the two categories of Hindu sacred texts: the Sruti and Smritis. The Sruti, by which is meant the Veda, composed of eternally and universally valid spiritual truths. The Smritis on the other hand, are put back and religions, for the society and subject to revision from time to time. Vivekananda believed that Hindus smritis had to be revised in the modern era. But Srutis courses are forever - they can be re-interpreted.

Vivekananda advised his disciples to be saints, disinterested and Shraddha (faith). He encouraged the practice of Brahmacharya (celibacy). In one conversations with his childhood friend Sri Priya Nath Sinha he attributes his mental and physical powers, eloquence to the practice of Brahmacharya.
