New Delhi is the capital of the Republic of India.
Located in the city of Delhi, New Delhi was arranged by Edwin
Lutyens, a leading 20th century British architect. It is the
seat of government of India and the government of the Territory
of the national capital of Delhi. Jantar Mantar is an astronomical
observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II Calcutta is the
capital of India until 1911 during the British Raj. However,
Delhi had served as the political and financial situation
of many empires of ancient India, including the Mughal Empire.
In the early 1900, a proposal was made to the British government
to move the capital of the Indian empire of Calcutta to Delhi.
Unlike Calcutta, which is located on the east coast of India,
Delhi is located in the northern part of India and the government
of British India thought it would be easier to administer
in India rather than Delhi, Calcutta. Due to its historical
and cultural significance, George V, Emperor of India, made
the announcement Raj’s capital should be moved from
Calcutta to Delhi.
New Delhi has been developed to the south of the old town
which was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. However,
New Delhi overlays the site of seven ancient cities, and therefore
includes many historic buildings like the Jantar Mantar and
Lodhi Gardens. The India Gate commemorates Indian soldiers
who lost their lives during the Second World War I Much New
Delhi was arranged by Edwin Lutyens, a leading 20th century
British architect, and was called "Lutyens' Delhi".
Lutyens contained central administrative region of the city
as a token of the British Empire claims. At the heart of the
city was the magnificent Rashtrapati Bhawan (then known as
the Viceroy's House), which has sat on top of Raisina Hill. The
Rajpath, also known as King's Way, extending from the India
Gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Secretariat, which houses
various ministries of the government of India, flanked outside
the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Parliament House, designed by
Herbert Baker, is located at the Sansad Marg, which is parallel
to the Rajpath. After India gained independence in 1947, some
autonomy has been granted to New Delhi and was administered
by a Chief Commissioner appointed by the government of India.
In 1956, Delhi, has been converted into a union territory,
and possibly Chief Commissioner has been replaced by a lieutenant
governor. The Constitution (Sixty-ninth Amendment) Act, 1991
"said the Union Territory of Delhi to be formally known
as the Territory of the national capital of Delhi. A system
of diarchy has been introduced under which the elected government
was given broad powers, except the right of the order and
who have remained with the central government. The effective
execution of the law came in 1993.
