India is known in particular for heart surgery, hip resurfacing
and other advanced areas of medicine. The government and private
hospital groups are committed to the goal of making India
a leader in the industry. The main attraction of the industry
is low-cost treatment. Most estimates of the cost of processing
claims from India begin at about one tenth of the price of
comparable treatment in America or in Britain. India is fast
becoming a destination of choice for American citizens seeking
complicated, high-end medical procedures. Estimates of the
value of medical tourism in India go as high as $ 2 billion
per year by 2012. The Indian government is taking steps to
address infrastructure issues that hinder the growth of the
country in medical tourism.

The Planning Commission holds a superior quality of medical
services coupled with the low cost of surgeries responsible
for one of the most attractive destinations for travel medical
value. In his most recent high-level report, the committee
made a comparison of costs of various medical procedures.

coronary bypass surgery would cost a patient $ 6000 in India,
the same operation would cost $ 7894 a person in Thailand,
Singapore, $ 10417 , $ 23938 in the United States and $ 19700
in Britain.
Surgery replacement heart valve would cost $ 10000 patients
in Thailand, Singapore, $ 12500, $ 200000 in the United States
and $ 90000 in Britain. In India, it costs only $ 8,000. Although
the bone marrow transplant would cost $ 30000 in India, doctors
in the United States would pay anywhere between $ 250000-400000
while those from Britain would pay $ 150000. A plastic surgery
would cost $ 3500 in Thailand, 20000 dollars in the United
States and $ 10000 in Britain. But in India, it costs only
$ 2,000.
