India Gate
India Gate is 2.02 km from the Tourist Office in the eastern
part of Rajpath on the foundations laid by the Duke of Connaught,
February 10, 1923 Sir Lutyen according to the plan and design,
42m high India Gate was built in 1931. This is the War Memorial
Arch founded in memory of the 90000 British and Indian soldiers
in the 1st World War and the Afghan war in 1919, who died
for the Allied forces on behalf of Britain. However, the name
of only 13516 soldiers are inscribed on the gate. Below the

Rajpath are thronged with people during the night, when the
door of India is lit. The door of India also has a certain
resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Joined on top
of the door India in capital letters is the line:
"FOR THE DEAD INDIAN ARMIES WHO FELL HONOURED IN FRANCE
AND FLANDERS, MESOPOTAMIA AND PERSIA GALLIPOLI EAST AFRICA
AND ELSEWHERE IN THE NEAR AND THE FAR-EAST AND THE SACRED
IN THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE REGISTERED AND HAVE
FALLEN INTO INDIA OR NORTH- WESTERN BORDER, AND DURING THE
THIRD AFGAN WAR."
It is now one of the most famous monuments of Delhi.
